Villain Overview

My ink swells and boils. It consumes. I... am the Ink Demon. This realm is mine. You were born from it... you belong to it...
~ The Ink Demon introducing himself.
It's time... Audrey. Your road... is broken. Join the Dark Puddles... and give in to your suffering. You have nothing. You are without purpose. Your very existence... was a terrible lie. You're a mistake. A monster. Like. Me. But, I will make you strong. I will make you meaningful. It's time...
~ The Ink Demon speaking to Audrey before absorbing her into his body and becoming Beast Bendy.

The Ink Demon, referred to as Ink Bendy in external media, is the titular main antagonist of the Bendy franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Bendy and the Ink Machine and Boris and the Dark Survival and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Wilson Arch) of Bendy and the Dark Revival.

The very first creation of the Ink Machine, he was an attempt at recreating the cartoon demon known as Bendy, the most famous creation of Joey Drew and his partner Henry Stein. However, owing to his lack of a soul, Ink Bendy came out as a deformed monster, and was hidden away by Joey within the never-ending cycle of the Ink Machine, which he would rule over with an iron fist.

Following prolonged torture and experimentation by Wilson Arch and the Keepers, he was reduced to a more accurate, albeit less powerful, recreation of the original cartoon Bendy that was easier to subdue, although occasionally returning to a more demonic version of himself.

In Bendy and the Dark Revival, he is voiced by Sean Crisden, who also played one of the Fire Nation soldiers (where he was uncredited for) in The Last Airbender movie, Darkness's vocal effects (where he was uncredited for too as well) in Geometry Dash, and Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout.

Appearance[]

The fictional-fictional character he's based on resembles that of an old-fashioned cartoon character: having a black and white color scheme, cartoonish gloves, and a cheerful-looking expression (which apparently never changes). In addition to this, the top of his head resembles cartoony "horns", he wears a white bow tie, and sports black shoes. His eyes are in a pie-cut style, resembling that of an old, 1920s cartoon character.

The Ink Demon himself is an ink character with similarities to the original Bendy, but instead has a huge humanoid shape; his face is covered with dripping ink and he has a large left arm and a small right arm. His left hand appears to be a glove, whilst his right hand is more humanoid. His bowtie is crooked, being more in the center of his chest rather than the top. His right foot appears more claw-like, while his left foot appears to just be a blob. He is also notably taller than Henry.

Beast Bendy is the final form of the Ink Demon, used in the final battle against Henry. Unlike Ink Bendy, Beast Bendy is taller and skinnier, showing much broader spines on the back and shoulders, no eyes, and bearing rows of sharp teeth and longer but slender horns. His arms are the longest parts of his body, while his legs remain the same length. He has two holes in each of his hands, resembling the buttons on his cartoon variant's gloves.

After Wilson Arch's experimentation, The Ink Demon's became much more demonic-looking. Along with being much taller, his horns sport a more natural curve reminiscent of real animal horns compared to the cartoon inspiration of before. With eyes still obscured by thick ink covering his head, his mouth can now open fully with teeth comparable to a human's, complete with gums. His torso is much bulkier than before and has spikes coming out of his back and parts of his shoulders. His stature is bigger, yet almost skeletal in certain parts. Though his left hand remains partially gloved, both of his hands have turned into large claws, with his right forearm appearing to be almost bone-like. While his torso is larger, his legs are now incredibly skinny and have changed to a digitigrade stance with cloven hooves, reemphasizing the demonic imagery.

After fusing with Audrey Drew, The Ink Demon becomes Beast Bendy once again his appearance mostly remains the same but his lower body is now properly developed and he can actually walk/stand on his legs, without having to walk around on his fists. His body is also now more muscular and much larger.

Personality[]

There are so few rules to our world now. So little truths. But there is one rule we all know and respect down here: Beware the Ink Demon. Stay out in the open for too long and he will find you.
~ Twisted Alice warning Henry about the Ink Demon and his abilities.

Unlike his cartoon counterpart, who is a friendly, kind, heroic yet mischievous cartoon character, the Ink Demon is tyrannical, hostile, arrogant, violently destructive, sadistic and ruthless ink-like killing machine as he first attacked and tried to kill Sammy Lawrence (who was nothing but loyal) and then tried to kill Henry next. The Demon often takes joy in brutal kills and torture, such as The Projectionist whom he strangled to death and decapitated his head off. He also seems to be of a Trickster, such as scaring Henry to the vents or looking at him creepily before taking the Projectionist's corpse.

The Ink Demon also appears to be slightly narcissistic as he reacts poorly to having his cardboard cutouts destroyed and violently hunts down the perpetrator until they're dead. He also manipulated countless lost ones into worshipping him, giving them false promises of freedom.

In Chapter 5, an audio log from Joey Drew showed that the Ink Demon used to be harmless and merely wander around the studio, not harming anyone, but was locked up by Joey due to concerns that he would scare people and it is implied this might have led him down the path to evil. However, with the release of Bendy and the Dark Revival, he seems to have moved on from his past. Not even bringing it up when killing Ink Joey.

Chapter 5 also shows that the one thing that can wipe that grin off of his face is discovering that his show has ended, meaning that he is not supposed to exist anymore which causes him to breakdown as he disintegrates as a result of this.

In the Dreams Come to Life novel, Bendy was shown to be sad about being locked in the infirmary. When Buddy releases Bendy, Bendy pushes Buddy but doesn't kill him and quickly escapes. Later, Bendy faces off against Buddy and his friend, Dot. Bendy is shown to toy with them as he squeezes Dot, "Not hard enough to kill her but hard enough to hurt her."

In the Dark Revival, when he finally speaks, he is shown to be arrogant, sadistic and highly egotistical. He proudly boasts about his 'dark kingdom' and intends to keep the cycle of pain going forever. He is also shown to be quite manipulative, pressuring Audrey and using her insecurities to pressure her into allowing him to assimilate her. He eventually saves Audrey from Wilson's monster at the end and chooses to merge them together rather than kill her, calling her a "monster" and "mistake" just like him (although, it was all a manipulation). However, after he kills Joey's redeemed ghost, Audrey takes control of their body and chooses to restart the cycle. However, she chooses to keep the Cartoon Bendy with her in the real world, with Bendy now recreated as a more benevolent entity and staying with Audrey.

Biography[]

Bendy and the Ink Machine[]

One weird note, the first figure ever created was a failed attempt in the likeness of the character called "Bendy". Since that time, no other attempts of this particular figure have emerged. And the one that did... I dunno, there's just something unworldly about him.
~ Thomas Conner explaining the creation of The Ink Demon.

As revealed throughout audio logs, the Ink Demon was the first creation of the Ink Machine. The Ink Machine itself was created during the production of Bendyland, an amusement park themed around Joey Drew's creations, such as Alice Angel, Boris the Wolf, and Bendy himself. As bankruptcy threatened the company, Joey opted to literally bring his cartoon characters to life as living attractions for Bendyland, hiring the mysterious Gent company to create the Ink Machine. With the help of Thomas Connor, Joey ran film reel of the cartoons through the machine to bring the cartoons to life.

The Ink Demon was the first attempt of the Ink Machine, but came out mutilated, more akin to a limping corpse than anything resembling the cartoon character. Because of this, Connor and the rest of the Gent company would not try to make more copies of Bendy. The Ink Demon was hidden in the basements of the studio, being considered unworldly by Connor, and being despised by Joey Drew. Eventually, Connor realized that the failure of their attempts at cartoon characters were a result of lacking a soul, hence the deformed nature of the demon. The unempathetic Drew then opted to sacrifice his workers to the machine to create better cartoon characters, the first of which was Susie Campbell, who became a twisted version of Alice Angel. He would also sacrifice music director Sammy Lawrence, projectionist Norman Polk, theme park designer Bertrum Piedmont, and others.

Eventually, however, Joey Drew Studios fell into bankruptcy, and the monsters created by the Ink Machine were trapped within the Ink Machine itself in a never-ending cycle. The Ink Demon himself would rule over the cycle, killing anyone who crosses his path. He resided within a giant Ink Machine within the depths of the building, amidst a throne of projections playing Bendy cartoons. Upon this throne sat a film reel called "THE END", which when played, would destroy him.

Dreams Come to Life[]

Daniel Lewek discovers the Ink Demon for the first time from the other room after the infirmary, with the despondent creature crying and sadly moaning. Daniel enters the room only for the Ink Demon to escape after pushing Daniel out of his way. Later, the Ink Demon chases Daniel and his friend, Dot, around the studio and at one point, rips an arm of the dead man called Dave straight out of his socket. Ink Bendy squeezes Dot hard, but not enough to kill her. Daniel rescues Dot, who cuts off the Ink Demon's hand. The Ink Demon is later dropped into a trapdoor, which seemingly kills the creature. However, he catches Daniel and pulls him into the trapdoor, and kills him by ripping him in half with his teeth him and drowning him in the Ink.

Bendy: The Lost Ones[]

The Ink Demon reappears in this novel, a sequel to Dreams Come to Life. Now in Atlantic City with the Ink Machine, he’s assumedly released by Bill, Constance and Brant and proceeds to attack the trio. He grabs Brant and pulls him but the latter breaks free. The Ink Demon then attacks the Ink Machine in rage for some unknown reason.

Towards the end of the novel, The Ink Demon is confronted by Brant as a Lost One. After an intense chase and fight, Brant manages to avoid the Ink Demon and reunite with Bill as a Lost One. The Ink Demon was presumably captured by Joey and taken back to New York alongside the Ink Machine afterwards.

Boris and the Dark Survival[]

In the prequel to Bendy and the Ink Machine and the sequel to Dreams Come to Life, the Ink Demon returns as the main antagonist. He acts like in Chapter 3, appearing randomly, and Boris (who is the playable character) can hide from him by hiding in the Little Miracle Station. The Ink Demon is slower than Twisted Alice, but around the same speed as the Projectionist.

Bendy and the Ink Machine[]

Chapter 1: Moving Pictures[]

The Ink Demon first appeared in the first chapter as the main antagonist, although also as a cardboard cutout. Several of these can be seen throughout the Workshop (the setting in the game). Some of these cutouts appear to move on their own, especially the one that pops up near the theater room and the other appearing behind Henry in a hallway.

Bendy also appears on multiple posters throughout the workshop and sticker-like objects on the walls and desks. Several sketches of the character also appear on some desks, especially one of his heads with a sticky note reading "NO" on it, hinting that it was a discarded design. After Henry collects all six items, Bendy appears on a projection in the theater room.

After Henry activates the Ink Machine, the entrance to the Ink Machine room is suddenly boarded up. Upon getting closer, Ink Bendy will burst from the boards, attempting to grab Henry while screeching. After seemingly failing, the Ink Demon retreats back into the Ink Machine room, whilst the hallway that Henry is in begins to fill with ink.

The Ink Demon can be seen again when in the Pentagram Room. He appears for a split second in a flashback, along with other flashbacks of a wheelchair and the Ink Machine, before Henry passes out. Originally, before the Bendy flashback, Ink Bendy could be spotted standing near Henry's desk.

Chapter 2: The Old Song[]

The Ink Demon reappears again in Chapter 2 as the main antagonist. Bendy also appears again as a cardboard cutout. However, these cutouts can be destroyed by Henry with an axe. Some cutouts, especially ones in front of a pentagram, reappear when Henry turns his back on them, seemingly untouched.

In the orchestra room, several Bendy cutouts appear, depending on where Henry is in the room. If downstairs, multiple cutouts spawn in the upstairs room, increasing if Henry leaves and reenters the room. This also occurs if Henry is in the upstairs room, only the cutouts spawn downstairs on stage. A maximum of nine Bendy cutouts can appear here.

Bendy also appears as sketches, drawings, and "stickers" throughout the music department, both on desks and on walls. Near the end, Sammy Lawrence summoned the Ink Demon in an attempt to sacrifice Henry and appease him, hoping that Ink Bendy would free him from his ink-covered body. However, the Ink Demon seems to kill Sammy instead, although this is unofficial because the death happens off-screen. This gives Henry time to escape. Near the exit, the Ink Demon will suddenly pop up in front of Henry, blocking the exit. Forced to find another way out, Henry is then forced to run from Ink Bendy until he reaches the vault. Having blocked the door, Henry is seemingly safe from the Ink Demon.

Chapter 3: Rise and Fall[]

The Ink Demon appears once again in Chapter 3 as the secondary antagonist and the biggest threat Henry faces. He lurks throughout the department, where Henry is forced to hide from him in order to escape. Twisted Alice seems to despise and even fear him and his ink.

Ink Bendy is able to teleport to Henry by warping through the walls if he lingers for too long in an area. Henry can avoid him by hiding in one of the Little Miracle Stations, after which he will see Ink Bendy lumbering past him before disappearing into another wall. However, if Ink Bendy is close enough when Henry attempts to hide in a Little Miracle Station, Ink Bendy can kill him. Henry may also escape him by returning to the elevator before he is caught. Ink Bendy can also kill the Butcher Gang members, albeit by accident, with his ink. Ink Bendy cannot be hurt, let alone killed, by any of Henry's weapons, including the Tommy Gun which has the ability to kill The Projectionist in seconds. Physical Alice also mentions that Ink Bendy hates it when his cardboard cutouts are destroyed and after Henry destroys them, Ink Bendy chases him down once again.

At the end of the Chapter, if Henry chose the Demon path earlier, the post-credits image shows Ink Bendy in the doorway with a Searcher and several Butcher Gang members, implying that he is raising a massive army of ink creatures.

Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders[]

The Ink Demon appears in Chapter 4 twice and seems to be an anti-hero. First appearing when Henry is climbing through the vents, the Ink Demon grabs the vent while shrieking in rage. Strangely, the Ink Demon makes no attempt to harm Henry as he runs his finger across the vent and then walks away. The next time Bendy appears, he attacks the Projectionist and saves Henry. After killing the Projectionist, the Ink Demon sees Henry but leaves and takes the body away. This is probably because, if you haven't noticed, the miracle stations have a scratched-out halo on them, which is what makes the creatures not go to anyone in there. When the Projectionist attempted to kill Henry while he was in the station, the Ink Demon appeared and tried to stop him. Bendy then looks at Henry in the station, but because of the halo "charm", he did not kill him.

Chapter 5: The Last Reel[]

He was there for his beginning, but he's never seen... the End.
~ Joey Drew explaining the key to Bendy's defeat.

The Ink Demon returns in "The Last Reel", the fifth and final chapter to the game, as the final boss and main antagonist. Bendy is first seen when Henry gets a pipe walking along the balcony. If the Butcher Gang is there, the Ink Demon can save Henry from them with ink by killing them, posing no threat to Henry in this scene. Bendy's depiction in cartoons is referenced inside the Film Vault, where he had previously stolen The End film reel from the vault (Possibly to keep it away from Henry) forcing Henry to go into the demon's lair.

Later, as the player is walking to the lair, the Ink Demon is spotted walking down a parallel hallway, a glass window between the two sides. Afterwards, the player comes across an ink river between them and the Ink Demon's lair, causing Henry to leave Allison and Tom behind, for they can't cross it safely. Walking into the lair, Henry rather quickly finds a makeshift throne for the beast, made out of objects and surrounded by screens showing snippets of Bendy cartoons. Henry then finds and plays a cassette recorded by Joey by the throne, explaining that they created life both on the screen and in the hearts of those who saw the moving pictures. Joey then goes on to say that when the tickets stopped selling, "only the monsters remained... shadows of the past", but explains Henry can save them, and says there's one thing Bendy never saw: "The End".

MonsterBendy

Beast Bendy on his "throne".

Immediately after this recorded speech, Bendy suddenly appears behind the "throne" before transforming into "Beast Bendy", a monstrous form with a short lower half, giant, muscular arms which, due to his short and weak legs, are used as legs, and his face becoming a large ghastly maw of razor-sharp teeth. After swatting Henry away, the first stage of the final boss starts, where Henry must flip switches in the hallways before the throne to open a door while avoiding the stampeding Ink Demon, for touching him is an instant kill attack.

BeastBendyFadesAway

Beast Bendy is killed after witnessing the End.

After opening the door into a small room, Beast Bendy appears and the second phase starts, where Henry must trick the brute into slamming into all four of the large, ink-filled glass pillars in the room, breaking them. After breaking all four pillars, the lights in the room flicker off and the beast vanishes, but once Henry walks back to the "throne room" and pushes in the "The End" tape into the film player by the throne, the beast reappears, but gets distracted by one of the screens turning on. Once two screens show "The End", the beast tries to make a grab for Henry, but a very bright light (possibly coming from all the screens in the room showing the same ending card) stuns, then disintegrates the beast, ending the threat for now.

Bendy and the Dark Revival[]

Some time after the events of Bendy and the Ink Machine, Wilson Arch and the Keepers imprisoned Henry, Sammy and Alice to keep the Cycle they were in going on for years. They then tortured and experimented on Bendy for an extended period of time, however, it had no effect on him and they eventually ruled out being able to kill him. Eventually, they reduced Bendy into a harmless cartoon form after prolonged torture of him, finally being able to inflict pain on this new version of him, and locked him up. However, Audrey Drew eventually came across him and freed him.

The Ink Demon Killing The Lost One

The Ink Demon killing a Lost One.

Although Audrey was kind to Bendy, she shocked him by accident and caused him to flee. Afterwards, the Ink Demon repeatedly chased and tried to kill Audrey. On several occasions, she found Perfect Bendy who fled in fear. She eventually found him and managed to win him over. Perfect Bendy helped her look around to find a way to the Gent workshop, with Audrey promising to protect him despite his fear of the workshop (due to the torture he endured there).

However, after meeting Ink Joey again, Audrey returned and discovered Bendy was nowhere to be seen. As she approached the location of the Keepers and Wilson’s workshop, the Ink Demon attacked her but was shocked by the nearby towers. He turned into Perfect Bendy within her very eyes, causing Audrey to recognize they were one and the same. In shame over nearly hurting his new friend, Perfect Bendy walks away, leaving Audrey alone.

The Ink Demon warns Audrey that Wilson is lying about his good intentions. He’s proven right as Wilson intends to sacrifice Audrey to finish his new creation. Audrey pushes Wilson in instead and he fuses with the creation. As the monster overpowers Audrey and destroys her legs, the Ink Demon arrives and saves Audrey, killing Wilson’s creation. He approaches Audrey and points out their similarities in being mistakes and monsters, albeit in a manipulative manner and offers to save her by merging them together. Audrey accepts and they merge into Beast Bendy.

However, Ink Joey arrives and reaches out to Audrey. Although the Ink Demon kills him, Audrey manages to take control of the body. With the help of her allies throughout the game (Allison, Tom, Porter and Henry himself), they manage to kill Bendy’s army of Lost Ones and Sammy Lawrence. Audrey then plays “The End” tape and resets the cycle.

With Audrey controlling the cycle, the Ink Demon is erased from the new timeline; ending his evil once and for all. Audrey was then able to take 'Bendy' with her, free from his demonic half, in his Perfect form and now complete, even having a red bow tie. Joey’s dream of bringing Bendy into the real world has finally been completed and he’s a friendly entity just like his cartoon counterpart.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the presumed melted ink covering his face, the Ink Demon can still sense Henry around him.
    • It's implied that the sense can be either through the ink around the Workshop or through Henry's silent breathing. It is also implied that Ink Bendy may also be able to sense the vibrations caused by Henry's footsteps.
    • It is possible that the Ink Demon cannot really see and believes that Henry may be Joey, which could be why he attempts to attack him, although it is also likely that Ink Bendy can see just fine.
  • Bendy originally had three darts on his gloves, but they were redesigned into two buttons on each due to a potential similarity with Mickey Mouse (i.e. the gloves).
  • Coincidentally, his head shape, at least in his Ink Bendy form in the first game, is similar to Mandy's hairstyle from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
  • There were several theories involving the origin of the Ink Demon until Chapter 5 confirmed that he was really a failed attempt to bring cartoons to life:
    • One theory stated that he possessed a victim in a ritual, which explains a wheelchair seen in Chapter 1 and the fact that Ink Bendy himself has a twisted ankle.
    • However, other theories suggested that Ink Bendy is Bendy but a failed attempt to be created into the latter.
    • It was theorized that Joey transformed himself into Ink Bendy, this being hinted at by the fact that the Demon path contains a recording of Joey, while the Angel path contains one of Susie. In the recording, Joey discusses the idea that belief can make one powerful, rich, and even enable them to cheat death, musing over such a positively silly thought but with such a tone that he seems to want to try it. This implies that Joey, in his older years, was suffering from health conditions and may have been the one bound to the wheelchair until he learned to control the Ink Machine, turning himself into his own character so as to become immortal. This would explain why Joey was obsessed with keeping the Machine running. This theory would make sense because in the Chapter 1 flashbacks, one is of Joey's wheelchair and when Ink Bendy is chasing you, he appears to have a slight limp.
      • With Joey later turning out still alive albeit remorseful for the damage he had done in the studio, it turns out that the Ink Demon is indeed Bendy incarnated by the Ink Machine in an attempt to bring his characters to life to help the public understand how he perceives them by letting them meet in person. The project took a blow when an attempt to create Bendy had a less-than-favorable outcome and no attempt to perfect the dancing demon was performed ever again.
  • The Ink Demon's design from the game's beta lacked arms and legs and had a different head shape. During this time, Ink Bendy also had a different behavior in Chapter 1: Instead of trying to grab Henry, Ink Bendy just looked around, seemingly checking the place out.
  • Bendy appears on the loading screen in the bottom right corner for a short time.
  • Bendy appeared on a Steam Summer Sale banner in a 1920's swimsuit.
  • From the audio logs in Chapter 5, the Ink Demon seemed like a harmless entity, as he only wandered around the studio, although the other workers at the studio seemed to have felt threatened by his appearance and behavior and he was eventually locked away.
  • Bendy fought Cuphead on DBX and won.
  • When asked in his first QnA video regarding the relationship between Bendy and Alice Angel, theMeatly remained silent about the subject.
    • It's later implied that Bendy and Alice Angel were lovers based on a description of her merchandise posted on Tumblr, although this post was later removed.
    • The Ink Demon and Physical Alice are very obvious adversaries to one another, as Alice states that former hates when she destroys his cutouts.
  • Despite one of the drawings around the studio claiming that cartoon Bendy's expression never changes, Bendy's expression changes many times during both the cartoon shorts and in the "Bendy Crack Up Comics" book, though this could be just a joke as implied by the note next to the drawing demanding that Joey not see it.
