Our bodies may be stomped... But our will cannot be crushed! We will forge ahead!
~ A Goomba in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

The Goombas are a species of enemies that appear as soldiers of the Koopa Troop in the Super Mario franchise. They are notable for being the most iconic enemies in the Mario series, appearing in almost every Mario title to date.

Biography[]

Super Mario Bros.[]

The Goombas make their first appearance in the first title of Super Mario Bros series. In the instruction manual, it is stated that the Goombas were originally a peaceful species who lived alongside the Toads of the Mushroom Kingdom. However, they at some point betrayed their neighbors and sided with the Koopa Clan, assisting them in their invasion of the kingdom.

They appear as common enemies throughout the game, being seen in almost every level to challenge the Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels[]

Goombas act the same as in Super Mario Bros. Most Goombas appear in groups of three or four. While they don't appear as often, they still are in most levels.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Goombas appear in this game as common enemies throughout. Larger variants of the Goombas called "Big Goombas" also make their debut in the Giant Land world of the game and would go on to appear in several other Mario games following this.

Super Mario Land[]

While regular Goombas do not appear, a subspecies called Goombo do. They act exactly like Goombas.

Super Mario World[]

The Goombas in this game were replaced by Galoombas, a subspecies of Goombas. They act almost the same, except for the fact that the fact that they are knocked upside down and can be thrown when stepped on.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[]

Goombas reappear in this title. In addition to this, two new species of Goombas appear. A ghost form called Terekuribo appear in the Pumpkin zone while a water Goomba called Aqua Kuribo appear in the Turtle zone.

Super Mario 64[]

Goombas appear as common enemies, patrolling in small areas in a circular motion. When spotting Mario, they will charge towards him. Mario can easily defeat them by jumping, kicking, or throwing a object such a Bob-omb at them. In Tiny-Huge Island, Big and Mini Goombas appear based on which version of the island Mario is on; Big Goombas are encountered on Huge Island, and Mini Goombas are encountered on Tiny Island.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Goombas, Paragoombas, and Mini Goombas appear. They make short hops to the vocal riffs, high enough to avoid incoming Koopa Shells. A massive Goomba called Mega Goomba appears as the boss of World 4, having been enlarged by Bowser Jr.'s Mega Mushroom. To defeat it, Mario has to stand on an elevating platform and ground pound on its head.

Super Mario Galaxy[]

There are five different Goombas in Super Mario Galaxy. The first are regular Goombas. They will charge at Mario if they see him, and can be killed by jumping on it or spinning then kicking it. The second are mini Goombas. They act nearly identical to regular Goombas, with the only difference being that they can be defeated in one spin instead of two. Octoombas are the third type, appearing in most galaxies in some form. They walk back and forth and will either attempt to headbutt Mario or will spit a rock at him. They are killed just like mini Goombas. The fourth type are called Goombeetles. They act the same as Goombas, except that they can't be jumped on since they wear helmets. The last type are Jack O'Goombas, which only appear in Ghostly Galaxy. They can spit blue flames at Mario, and lose their helmets if Mario spins near them, turning them into regular Goombas. They can't be killed by jumping on them but will be killed instantly with a ground pound.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Along with regular and Big Goombas, this game introduces an even larger Goomba variant in the Mega Goombas.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Goombas, Mini Goombas, Giant Goombas, Octoombas, Goombeetles, and Jack O'Goombas return. Paragoombas and Big Paragoombas, enemies absent from the first game, also appear. If a Chance Cube is rolled, Goombas pop out if Bowser's emblem is facing up.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Goombas reappear in Super Mario 3D Land where they act the same as in most other 3D platformers. In addition to these Goombas, there are also Goomba board, which don't do anything except get in the way, and Tail Goombas, which jump in the air and do a tail swing when they land. They can be killed the same way as regular Goombas and give Mario either a coin or Super Leaf. There are also stacked Goombas called Goomba towers, but they act the same as regular Goombas.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Goombas behave similarly to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Goombas turns into Gold Goombas when Mario goes through a Gold Ring, dropping multiple coins when defeated. Bone Goombas appear in towers and castles and behave like regular Goombas.

New Super Mario Bros. U[]

Goombas, Hefty Goombas, Big Goombas, and Prickly Goombas return. A new species called Goombrats appear that have tomato-shaped heads and black stems on their their head resembling tomato leaves.

Super Mario 3D World[]

Alongside regular Goombas, the game introduces Cat Goombas that have transformed by Super Bells. They leap up and pounce at the player.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Goombas are one of the possessable enemies in the game. When Mario takes control of a Goomba via Cappy, the Goomba can jump on other Goombas to make a stack, allowing access to higher grounds. A female Goomba named Goombette appears as an NPC. When approached as Mario, she will flee. But if approached while possessing a Goomba, she falls in love and grants Mario a Power Moon.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Goombas appear as enemies in the first stage of the Adventure Mode. Their only attack is to touch the player, and can be easily defeated by simply attacking them. A Goomba trophy serves as the stage for Event 14: Trophy Tussle 1. If the player defeats all three opponents, they obtain the Goomba trophy.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Goombas appear as enemies in the Subspace Emissary as part of the Subspace Army. Their only attack is to charge at the player. They can be defeated easily, and jumping on their head defeats them instantly.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

In the Smash Run mode for the 3DS version, Goombas appear as enemies, retaining their behavior and weaknesses from before. A trophy can be obtained in both versions.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

A Goomba appears as a novice neutral spirit, with its ability increasing foot-based attacks. Its spirit battle is against five tiny Donkey Kongs on the Battlefield form of the Mushroom Kingdom stage.

Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

In addition to regular Goombas appearing as basic enemies, this game also sees the introduction of the Goomba King or "Goomboss", an ordinary Goomba turned into a king by Bowser's magic and installed as leader of the Goomba race. This game is also notable for introducing heroic Goombas who do not serve in Bowser's army, with a Goomba named Goombario serving as an ally for Mario on his quest.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Goombas act similarly to Paper Mario. They are residents of Rogueport and thieves, bandits, crooks, cheats, and cleaners. In Bowser's sections, the Goombas run away from Bowser, but can still damage Bowser if he touches them. Mario's first partner is Goombella, a female Goomba from the University of Gloom, and acts identically to Goombario from the first game. Her teacher, Professor Frankly, aids Mario by interpreting the Magical Map to find the next Crystal Star.

Super Paper Mario[]

Goombas are the first enemies to be encountered. Some of them have the ability to flip. Stronger silver Headbonk Goombas appear on the 89th floor of the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials, with the ability to headbonk the player. Even stronger Dark Goombas appear exclusive to the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Goombas can be found in Worlds 1, 2, 3, and 6. Paper-Cone Goombas are Goombas folded to have spikes and can attack Mario by flying into him as paper airplanes. 2-Fold Goombas are two Goombas fused together to become one and attack by "biting". Goomba Wheels are five Goombas stacked on each other in a circular pattern to form a wheel. Mural Goombas appear in Dryback Stadium. Shiny Goombas are rarer and have more health and deal more damage. The first major boss of the game is Megasparkle Goomba, who can combine with his horde of Goombas to become a massive Goomba that can be cut with the Scissors thing.

Paper Mario: Colour Splash[]

Goombas have the same abilities as they did in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Some Goombas also appear as helpful NPCs.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Some Goombas have been transformed into Folded Soldiers by King Olly and become hostile Origami Goombas. Large Paper Macho Goombas can be found in the hubworld.

Super Mario Run[]

Mario automatically vaults over Goombas, but pressing the screen while he vaults makes him jump on them to aim higher.

Super Mario Maker series[]

Goombas appear as regular enemies. They can be given wings to become Paragoombas, Super Mushrooms to become Big Goombas, or stacked on top of each other to become Goomba Towers. Shoe Goombas also appear and can come in green boots or red heels. In underwater sections, Goombas rapidly chase after Mario.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

Goombas can be found in Mushroom Way, Bandit's Way, and the Pipe Vault. They are quite weak and only attack by biting. Stronger variants called Gu Goombas can be encountered in Bowser's Keep.

Super Mario Bros. film[]

In the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, Goombas are Dinohattanites that have evolved from dinosaurs in the Dinohattan parallel dimension. The only resemblance they have to the game Goombas are their rounded heads. They serve as henchmen to President Koopa.

Hotel Mario[]

Goombas wander about in the levels moving left to right, opening any closed hotel doors they come across. Paragoombas (referred to as Flying Goombas) have a similar pattern, except they fly. Two new Goomba enemies are introduced in this game. A Bellhop Goomba wears a uniform and follow a similar pattern to regular Goombas, except they are can turn around at will. A Rhinestone Goomba wear wigs and sunglasses, and move faster than the other Goombas and may occasionally jump. All four Goomba enemies can be defeated by any mean.

Dr. Mario World[]

A Goomba is the first obtainable assistant, unlockable by completing Stage 20. Its Stage Mode ability increases the score by a single percent while its Verses Mode ability grants a four percent chance for the attack meter to fill up instantly. At Skill Level five, these percentages are increased to five and twenty percent respectively.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[]

Goombas appear in both the original and Nintendo Switch remake as enemies in various underground passages and dungeons, including Tail Cave, Bottle Grotto, Kanalet Castle, Catfish's Maw, Face Shrine, Turtle Rock, and Eagle's Tower (the later of which is the only area they appear top-down). Link can defeat them by jumping on them or slashing at them with his sword.

Minecraft[]

In the "Super Mario Mash-Up Pack" for Minecraft, Goomba textures are used to replace chickens.

WarioWare series[]

Several microgames involve the player defeating Goombas to win.

Personality[]

They were once peaceful creatures and residents of the Mushroom Kingdom. However, once Bowser invaded, the Goombas quickly sided with the Koopa King and his forces. It has been mentioned that they lack special abilities and fighting skills, and they aren't the toughest or strongest, but what they lack in strength they make up for in will and determination, as it has been mentioned they never give up. They have been described as the lowest of the low and the underling of underlings. As mentioned, they are the most common species in the Mushroom Kingdom and make up the largest part of Bowser's forces. It is also mentioned that they rudely bump into people they meet and always have grumpy looks on their faces.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, despite being the first enemy to appear in Super Mario Bros., the Goombas were actually the last enemies to be added to the game, and were created because the developers felt that the Koopa Troopas were too hard to be basic enemies.
  • Goombas are incredibly unintelligent. They occasionally walk off cliffs.
