Mayor Shelbourne is the main antagonist of the animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
He was voiced by Bruce Campbell.
Description[]
He is the greedy and envious mayor of Chew & Swallow's town. He takes advantage of Flint Lockwood's invention, the FLDMSDFR to gain popularity and become richer. His arrogance is partly responsible for the disaster at the end of the film and his own alleged loss.
History[]
The mayor first appear in a publicity where he officialy announces the opening of Sardine Land. He then explains to Baby Brent that he wishes to be more powerful and will do anything to achieve that goal. When the new attraction opens, Flint accidentally destroys everything by trying to activate his food creation machine.
Right after the FLDSMDFR has been sent into orbit, food is raining from the sky and Shelbourne now has an idea to bring Swallow Falls out of oblivion. By dint of eating without stopping, the mayor is gaining so much weight that he is no longer recognized by Flint during an order.
Later in the film, Flint finds that the food is getting bigger, posing a potential danger to the town. He then explains the problem to the mayor who denies it and is content to always want more food. He then convinces Flint to send the kill code.
Shelbourne hosts a grand opening for Swallow Falls and its new food attractions. While a Bolognese storm sows panic, the mayor is in Flint's base where he orders a giant buffet. He prevents the teenager from deactivating the machine by destroying the only switch that linked the machine to the town.
Later, while Flint finds a solution to stop the FLDSMDFR, the mayor has him lynched by the inhabitants although they are quickly stopped by Earl. During the setup of a Bread Boat Getaway, Shelbourne abandons everyone by boarding one of the boats and begins to devour it.
The mayor is therefore not seen again until the end of the film, once the machine is deactivated by Flint. We see him then, wrecked due to the fact that he devoured the whole of his ship. Trivia[]
- Mayor Shelbourne is sometimes thought to be the secondary antagonist of the first film but this is not true since he is the one that drove the plot, and have bigger plans than anyone.
- Shelbourne is not a character from the original storybook just like the rest of the cast.
